Attack The Block:
Attack The Block is an example of a teen movie aimed predominately towards a male target audience. Its themes of action, violence and horror alongside elements of comedy make it especially appealing to teen males. These themes and sub genres are particularly important, feedback from our research of what teens look for in a film highlighted action and comedy as being the preferred genres. The tense, violent and at times gory situations the characters find themselves in is something that is more favoured by males as females often find these things too gritty. The main characters aren't renowned actors but it has the same producers as 'Shaun Of The Dead', a well-known horror/comedy film that will broaden the films target to some young adults also, even featuring Nick Frost in parts. Its setting of a council estate in South London also makes appealing to this audience as urban settings are becoming increasingly common in teen movies, especially British ones, with examples such as Kidulthood, One Day and Anuvahood: where a gang-culture is often portrayed which again is popular amongst a male audience.
10 Things I Hate About You:
The sub genre of this teen movie is romantic comedy and is targeted more at females. Romantic films tend to appeal more to females due to themes of love and passion. The storyline is also a factor as with these films there is often an uncertain stage or a dilemma that is resolved by the end of the film, in this case both couples finding their perfect match, creating a 'feel-good-factor' that is often sought after in a Rom-Com film. The film is typically set in a high school and features an 'heart-throb' actor, Heath Ledger, making it appeal further as a teen movie for girls.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the 2-Part finale to the Harry Potter series. Based on the best-selling novels this teen movie is an fantasy, family, adventure film and is targeted both at males and females. Despite it being a teen movie its audience spreads throughout all ages although it is primarily targeted at an audience from ages 11-19. Coming from such a well-known franchise, this final installment had mass appeal both to fans of the books and of the previous films, many of whom will feel as though they have 'grown up with the characters'. It covers a range of different teen related themes such as love and friendship as well as more complex themes such as dealing with death. Although not quite as conventional as the typical 'high-school' setting, one of the main settings for the film is a magical high school that the three main characters, Harry, Ron and Harmoine, all attend/ed. The story line of good conquering evil with tense thriller-like aspects combined with elements of teen romance allow the film to transcend through to different audiences of all ages and genders.
