Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) volunteers to take her younger sister's place in the games. Joined by her district's male tribute Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson), Katniss travels to the Capitol to train for the Hunger Games under the guidance of former victor Haymitch Abernathy (Harrelson).

Representation and Stereotypes
Katniss Everdeen, the main character in the film, is not a stereotypical representation of a teenage girl in teen movies. Where they are usually portrayed as being quite feminine and would prefer gossip to confrontation, Katniss is a self-dependent character who isn't afraid of the threat of violence. She is portrayed, more than once, as being braver than some of the male characters which is not common. She also fills the role as the girl who is not instantly viewed as pretty but eventually 'transforms' into looking beautiful.
There are a group of characters within the film who stand out as the protagonists. These characters are a representation of the 'popular clique' that is commonly in teen movies, an example being seen in Mean Girls. They are skilled and arrogant and the favourites to winning the tournament. The leader of the crew, Cato, is the equivalent to the 'Jock' in a high school based teen movies: he's well built, tall, good looking and athletic.
